FOREST:
Land spanning more than 0.5 hectares with trees higher than 5 meters and a canopy cover of more than 30 percent,
or trees able to reach these thresholds in situ. It does not include land that is predominantly under agricultural or urban land use.
DEFORESTATION:
Human induced permanent conversion of forested land to non-forested land.
FOREST DEGRADATION:
A direct human induced loss of forest values likely to be characterised by a reduction of tree canopy cover over long term.
Routine management under sustainable forest management practices are not included.
PLANTED FOREST:
Forest predominantly composed of trees established through planting and / or deliberate seeding.
PLANTATION FOREST:
Planted forest that is intensively managed and meet ALL the following criteria at planting and stand maturity:
one or two species, even age class, and regular spacing.
AFFORESTATION:
Establishment of forest through natural regeneration, planting and/or deliberate seeding on land that was not classified as forest.
REFORESTATION:
Re-establishment of forest through planting and/or deliberate seeding on forest area.
RESTORATION:
An ongoing process of regaining ecological functionality and enhancing human well-being across deforested or degraded forest landscape.
